Euro India Collaboration in Grid Computing

June 1, 2005

In the 2-day Networking Workshop of the European Commission held at IIIT-B during May 30-31, 2005 (http://www.euroindia-it.org/contents/Bangalore_Agenda.pdf) to bring researchers, academics, government and industry from Europe and India together, considerable focus was laid in grid computing and e-Applications. In addition to three EC Officials from Brussels, there were many senior researchers from Europe; as many as nine of them participated thru video conferencing.

Dr Fabrizio Gagliradi a senior member of CERN, and the Director of EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-Science in Europe) took active interest in the possibility of Euro India Grid (he had successfully managed to get a similar project get off the ground in China last year).

With wide participation from across the country including academics and industry (IIT-Delhi, IISc, IIIT-B, C-DAC, GridSolv, TCS, Infosys, HP, IBM, Oracle and many from SME sector), it is time that we all sit together and take the offer from EC to build a Grid Consortium in India with active participation from Government, Industry and Academia.

Interestingly, one of the points of the Agreement signed between India & Europe during President Kalam’s visit to CERN last week, is the establishment of a high-speed connection to Euro Grid from India; even the timing appears right!
