IIIT’s at Kanchi & Jabalpur

Yesterday (November 22, 2003) MHRD (Ministry of HRD of Government of India)
has anounced the setting up of two IIIT’s; one at Kanchi and another at
Jabalpur with full funding and released Rs 51 Crores as initial grant for each
of the Institute. It is a welcome development. There is an urgent need to
scale IT manpower, though IT branch has become less popular with students.
There is also a need to let the Institutes experiment with newer opportunities
and offerings. Hopefully the Institutes will enjoy sufficient freedom and
autonomy to break new ground and flower into their own (we need rose, jasmine,
lotus and many other flowers instead of a mono-culture, even if it is lotus!)
